@Mr D. Further heresies.
Racing trained profesional Riggers + larcenous sail makers + the adoption of high spec materials as standard = cruising by sail is more expensive than by stink boat.
Which would make sail cruising A: more weather dependent, B: narrower, C: slower, D: deeper keeled, E: less likely to have aircon, watermaker &/or sufficient fridge space, F: Way more f’k around, G: Way The F’k less manouvreable & now H: more expensive.

Quiet & grace are nice, but I’m being won over to the dark side.

All-good to hear about our USN sub jockeys doing the good work with HMAS Diamantina. Good practice for salvage operations, and it likely did them good to get off their duffs and do some real work for a change.

We were partying on the Diamantina a few years back and left the boozing in the mess for an unguided tour. Those who’ve had the dubious pleasure of meeting Fifi will not be surprised to hear that she took to both the forward gun and the Bofors with glee. I have video of her maniacal laughter as we swung the A turret onto various Brisbane landmarks. She was eyeing off the shell too but sadly it had been defused & de-everything-elsed & you can see the blocked barrel in this shot.

I once came across the website of a company who are building fibreglass versions of the Nereia 36′ ketch desigedn by L. Francis Herreschoff’s. Herreshoff, who passed on in the early 70s, had similar views to your dad’s mate. My impression was that he’d wet himself in fury to see this done. Angular momentum of grave-site anticipated high.
